On his Twitter account, the Taliban Government’s UN envoy Suhail Shaheen said that the United Nations’ call to jump-start Afghanistan’s banking system reflected the reality on the ground, as freezing temperatures and frozen assets are a lethal combination for the people.
Guterres urged the international community to fund the UN’s five billion dollar humanitarian appeal for the Afghan people.
The UN chief warned that millions of Afghans are on the brink of death and called for releasing the country’s frozen assets and jump-starting its banking system to avoid the economic and social collapse.
Afghanistan is in an economic crisis as the United States froze about 9.4 billion dollars from the central bank’s assets.
