Three other agents are seriously injured, and the authorities are considering their medical evacuation to another country, confirmed the spokesman of the police institution, Gary Desrosiers.
The incident occurred last Friday when several prisoners in possession of firearms attempted an escape, taking three officers and a nurse as hostages. Specialized units thwarted the escape and the weapons, including an M4 rifle, three pistols and two 12-gauge rifles, were recovered.
During these clashes, the inmates set fire to the prison cafeteria and warehouse, according to a report by Justice of the Peace Annyl Civil, disclosed by the Haiti Libre platform.
Last February, in the same penitentiary center, an escape allowed more than 400 inmates to evade security, resulting in some thirty deaths and 18 wounded, including the prison director.
As of April 2021, the police only recaptured 87 detainees, and the rest remained at large.
More recently, in September, four inmates died during an escape at the Petit Goave prison, some 60 kilometers southwest of Haiti’s capital, while nine managed to escape.
