Mass protests in Iraq demand correction of elections results

irak-protestas
Baghdad, Dec 27 (Prensa Latina) Massive protests in Iraq are demanding the correction of the results of the parliamentary elections held last October, and which went badly for the representatives of the Popular Mobilization Units.

The demonstrations coincided with appeals filed by the head of the Al-Fatah (Conquest) alliance, Hadi Al-Amiri, one of the coalitions that lost more than 30 seats for the next legislature.

Most of the streets in Baghdad were blocked by burning tires and other objects, while troops were deployed to keep the flow of vehicles.

Those opposed to the electoral results sought a correction to the decisions of the Electoral Commission, whom they accuse of manipulating the votes.

The elections put 329 seats in the hemicycle into play; the Sairoon movement, of the Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, won the largest number of seats (79), while other parties considered favorites performed well below expectations and did not accept it.
