According to studies, it is a species of insect that was first described in 1861 as Culex vittatus, endemic to Asia and Africa and capable of transmitting diseases such as yellow fever, Zika, chikungunya and dengue.
Jesus Ortiz, a specialist from the Spiritist laboratory, said that the Aedes vittatus was detected in Spain in the 1970s, it later passed to Central America, the Caribbean and reached eastern Cuba last year.
He told local media that the mosquito was discovered in Jatibonico and Sancti Spiritus, mainly in La Trinchera area, although there were already reports of his presence in Camagüey and Ciego de Avila.
He explained that in 2020 an alert was issued to monitor its behavior and possible proliferation in the country.
In the opinion of the researcher, although its radius of action is about 300 meters, the insect can travel in containers with conditions to survive by bus, train or simply be transported by a person.
To date, Ortiz pointed out and according to the clinical-epidemiological behavior of dengue fever in the province. There are no reports of people infected with Aedes vittatus.
