The newspaper cites a report by the ministry that “details the role of the Israeli health system in the infamous kidnapping of Yemeni children.”
After the founding of the Jewish State, in 1948, some 50 thousand Yemenis who professed the religion emigrated to the country under the aegis of the Operation On Eagle Wings, better known as “Magic Carpet”, although they were always considered second-class citizens compared to the Sabras (born in the Historic Palestine) and the Ashkenazi majority (Central European Jews).
Although no new testimonies or data on the subject were published because it is a review of material already released, it is the first admission by a ministry in an official document that shows its participation in the scandal, the Haaretz wrote.
Experts put at a thousand the number of Yemeni Jewish children and less than that from countries in the Balkans or the Middle East who were kidnapped and given to wealthy families for adoption.
In many cases, families were told that their child had died, although they never showed the body, burial site or produced a death certificate.
Official investigations in 1967, 1988 and 1995 concluded that there was never an illegal adoption plan, although relatives and numerous experts rejected those verdicts.
