According to the Executive Creative Director at Marketing Agency Clemenger BBDO Jim Curtis, the Earth´s Black Box will record every step we take towards climate change. Hundreds of date sets, measurements and interactions relating to the health of our planet will be continuously collected and safely stored for future generations.
“The idea is if the Earth does crash as a result of climate change, this indestructible recording device will be there for whoever´s left to learn from that,” Mr. Curtis said.
The Earth´s Black Box website details it is a 10-by-4-by-3-meter steel monolith whose location will be on the remote island of Tasmania.
The box will be made of 7.5-centimeter thick, cantilevered granite steel that will be filled with a large number of hard drives powered by solar panels and will have internet connectivity.
Batteries will provide backup energy storage and when the sun is shining, the black box will document and preserve a stream of real-time scientific updates and analysis on the gloomiest issues the world faces, said Jonathan Kneebone, co-founder of the Australian artistic collective Glue Society.
Among data the Earth´s Black Box will store are measurements of land and sea temperatures, acidification of the oceans, atmospheric carbon dioxide, extinction of species and changes in land use.
It will also record about human population, military spending, and energy consumption.
It will also collect newspaper headlines, social media posts and news from key events such as climate change meetings of the Conference of the Parties (COP).
