According to national television broadcast here, 94 countries voted for, seven against and 69 abstained.
The resolution considers null and void the Israeli decision taken in 1981 to impose its laws and jurisdiction on the occupied Syrian Golan, and demands that Tel Aviv withdraws from this territory to the borders prior to June 4, 1967.
Addressing the vote, Syrian delegate Bassam Sabbagh mentioned the texts annually adopted by the UN General Assembly for more than five decades and calling on Israel to return this territory to Syria.
Israel’s intransigence and its refusal to comply with Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 497 (1981), demonstrates the United Nations’ inability to force this State to respect international legality, Sabbagh said.
Israel occupied the Syrian Golan after the so-called Six-Day War in 1967 and included that territory to its legal system in 1981, which has been rejected by the international community.
