Cuba offers to share experiences about pandemic in tourist forum

Madrid, Dec 1 (Prensa Latina) Cuba on Wednesday offered to share its experiences in the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic at the General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The head of the Cuban delegation to the UNWTO meeting, Eumelio Caballero, pointed out that the high level of scientific and technological development in his country “allowed us to develop three vaccines and two candidates, which can fight the new variants of the virus.”

In his speech, Caballero, who is Cuba’s charge d’affaires in Spain, commented that his country has the best willingness to provide the international community with everything achieved in the crusade against Covid-19.

“Thanks to the successful vaccination program (with our own vaccines), we could open borders on November 15, while we have sent more than 50 medical brigades to several countries, and shared our vaccines with some of them,” he said.

The diplomat stressed that all these breakthroughs were made despite the strict economic blockade that the United States has imposed on Cuba for more than six decades.

On the second day of the event, which started on Tuesday with a meeting of the Executive Council, messages from United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, among others, were read.

UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikavili pointed out that it is imperative to restore the resilience of tourism, the confidence of travelers, “and to project ourselves with respect for the environment and the consolidation of the sustainability of the domain.”
