President Joe Biden reported in a statement that flights from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi will be blocked, mirroring earlier moves taken by EU Member States.
According to the US president, it is a precautionary measure against detection of the new Covid-19 variant named Omicron.
Joe Biden urged US citizens to be fully vaccinated as soon as possible and also to receive the booster dose for more protection. The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday formally recognized the new strain formerly known as the B.1.1.529, and defined it as a “new variant to be of concern.”
The statement made it clearer than ever why the Covid-19 pandemic will not end until most of global people get vaccinated, Joe Biden stressed, who availed himself of this opportunity to praise coronavirus vaccine doses donated to other nations.
In his statement, Biden stated his country is world leader in vaccinating children aging 5 and 11. Perhaps he is unaware that Cuba´s childhood immunization campaign started off earlier and at this time nearly all those aging over 2 have been fully vaccinated.
Plus, Joe Biden urged the World Trade Organization (WTO) members to lift intellectual property protections for Covid-19.
The United States is the country with world´s worst coronavirus infection and death rates, averaging over 84,000 patients per day in the last two weeks and a total of 777,000 deaths.
