World heritage on the verge of collapse in Afghanistan

Minarete-Jam
Kabul, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) The minaret of Jam, located in Afghanistan's Ghor province and declared a world heritage site by Unesco, is on the verge of collapse, local officials warned today.

If attention is not paid to the condition of the minaret, we will soon see its collapse and it will be a great shame. Unesco officials should pay attention to this issue, said the head of Ghor’s Information and Culture department, Abdul Hai.

The historic structure, which stands between the Harirood River and the outskirts of Sarba Falak, was registered at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) world heritage site in 2002.

For the past 20 years, no attention has been paid to protect the minaret. Now, we are very worried that it will collapse during the coming winter, said civil rights activist Hassan Hakim.

The Jam Minaret was built some 800 years ago in the era of King Ghiasuddin Ghori, is 62 meters high and was erected entirely of baked bricks, it is famous for its heavy decoration of bricks, stucco and glazed tiles.
