China warns Lithuania of consequences for opening Taiwan office

Beijing, Nov 19 (Prensa Latina) China on Friday protested and warned that it will proceed with the necessary measures in defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, in view of Lithuania's decision to open a representative office of Taiwan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described this move as offensive, interfering and violates the One China principle and the communiques underpinning the establishment of Beijing-Vilnius ties.

The Ministry criticized the European country for taking that step despite the objection and dissuasion by the Asian nation, after calling on it to prepare to assume the due consequences.

In July, the island unveiled an agreement with Lithuania to open a representative office and Beijing considered it a provocation.

In addition, the European nation abandoned a cooperation mechanism with China and its Parliament passed a motion of censure for the alleged mistreatment to the Uyghur population in Xinjiang.

The international community adopted with 170 votes a resolution in 1971 that considers the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate representative to the United Nations and recognizes Taiwan as an inalienable part of that Asian nation.
