Bamako, Nov 7 (Prensa Latina) Organizations in Mali demanded that the ruling military junta fulfill its commitment to hold elections in February 2022, as part of the transition to a civilian government, the Africa News portal reported today.

Faced with delays in the organization of the vote, the spokesman of the political parties for the transfer of power, Amadou Koita, warned that the de facto government must respect the electoral calendar and the institutional reforms.

On his part, opposition activist Abacary Touré declared that in case the governmental transition in this country is delayed, they will appeal to judicial bodies to apply the constitutional precepts, and they will also carry out peaceful marches.

His statements were made after the Prime Minister, Choguel Maiga, expressed that the planned elections could be delayed for several months.

Delegations from the United Nations and the Economic Community of West African States have been in Bamako in recent days to demand that the interim government of this Sahelian country return to constitutional order after two coups in nine months.

The West African nation of Mali is immersed in a deep political crisis, aggravated by a military insurrection in August last year against the constitutional president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

Subsequently, last May, the military commanders, who were pulling the strings of power, dismissed the interim executive formed after the uprising and in place of the deposed civilian head of state, Colonel Assimi Goita, who appointed Maiga as prime minister, took power.
