A police spokesman referred to new evidences that put in doubt the initial version of a possible suicide by poisoning. The scientist was found dead last Saturday in her residence, located in the district of Tuzla, in the city of Istanbul.

The physical disappearance of Erbahar, 37, caused national consternation since she was one of the most prominent scientists in the country, with an outstanding work in the development of chemical sensors for the detection of toxic gases, which earned her worldwide recognition.

Shortly before her death, the expert was awarded the L’Oreal Prize conferred by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for her contributions in this field at the head of a team of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.
