The secretary general of the League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed his deep concern and regret over the rapid deterioration of relations between the two parties.

Without mentioning anyone in particular, Gheit estimated that there are sectors that want to affect relations between Lebanon and the rest of the Arab countries.

Given the situation, he called on the Lebanese president, Michel Aoun, and the prime minister, Najib Mikati, to act to reduce the tension, which increased as a result of statements made by the head of Information, George Kordahi.

In a program recorded in August (when he was not yet in charge of the Ministry) and broadcasted this week, Kordachi defended the Houthi rebels in Yemen and criticized the military intervention of the Saudi and other Arab nations in support of President Abd Rabbuh Mansur al-Hadi.

The comments angered Riyadh, which expelled Lebanese ambassador Fawzi Kabara, a decision that was later followed by the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.

The government of Yemen also condemned the statements of the Lebanese official and defended the military operation of the neighboring nation by ensuring that it corresponds to a bilateral agreement in support of the legitimate authorities.
