UN warns about worrying trends in Africa

United Nations, Oct 28 (Prensa Latina) UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed on Thursday warned at the UN Security Council (UNSC) about worrying trends across the African continent amid a context of a number of violence and armed conflict.

In too many places, Mohammed said in her speech at the high-level debate on cooperation between the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU), we are seeing an increase in seizures of power by force, as recently happened in Sudan.

In this regard, she stated this military coup represents a great threat to the political transition in Sudan.

Regarding Ethiopia situation, Mohammed regretted that the conflict will continue, despite calls from AU and UN for a permanent ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access to the Tigray region.

In spite of complex situation in Africa, there is already a growing cooperation between UN, AU and subregional organizations on sustainable development, elections and peace processes, Mohammed said.

Africa is the continent that concentrates a large part of the UN peacekeeping forces, which are present in different countries such as the Central African Republic, Mali, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Western Sahara, South Sudan, the Darfur area. (hybrid with AU) and the one deployed in the Abyei region.
