The journalist founder of WikiLeaks has been locked up in Belmarsh since the government of Ecuador handed him over to the British police in April 2019.

After a four-week trial in September 2020, a British magistrate refused to hand him over to U.S. justice because of his fragile mental health and fears that he would make an attempt on his life if extradited.

The United States wants to try Assange for disclosing thousands of secret files that, among other things, exposed war crimes committed by the U.S. military in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The appeal hearing against the British district court decision will take place in a higher court this Wednesday and Thursday, and if the extradition order succeeds, the cyberactivist could be sentenced to 175 years in prison in the United States under the 17 espionage charges against him.

Current WikiLeaks editor Kristinn Kristinn Hrafnsson, however, considered it ‘unthinkable’ and ‘unacceptable’ that the appeals court judges would agree to extradite him.
