On the occasion of the International Day of the fight against breast cancer this October 19, Adriana Torres, from the Health Surveillance Directorate of that portfolio, said that deaths from this kind of Cancer show a steady rise in Costa Rica.
She specified that if in 2018 there were 349 women who died from breast cancer, in 2019 they rose to 372 and 427 the following year, which represents 16 percent of all female deaths in the country.
56 percent of women who died from this disease in 2020 were between 30 and 69 years old, which is classified as premature mortality, given that death is registered at an early age, Torres explained.
By provinces, the official indicated that Heredia leads this negative parameter with a mortality rate of 20 deaths per 100,000 women, followed by San José (19) and Alajuela (15).
After emphasizing that an early diagnosis can make the difference between life and death, Torres reminded the female population of the importance of self-examination every month and periodic medical consultations, including a mammogram every two years in women over 40 years of age.
