WHO warns of the actual number of Covid-19 cases in Africa

Geneva, Oct 14 (Prensa Latina) The actual number of Covid-19 cases in Africa could reach 59 million and not 8.5 million as reported, the World Health Organization (WHO) referred today.

According to WHO, there are problems with the mechanisms for detecting the SARS-CoV-2 virus in that continent.

‘Our analyses indicate that only one in seven cases are being detected, which means that the true burden of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in Africa is estimated to be around 59 million cases,’ a WHO report indicated.

With only 67 million Africans fully vaccinated, equivalent to only 4.9 percent of the continent’s population, hundreds of millions of people remain vulnerable to severe disease and death, WHO’s representative detailed.

It is necessary to ‘move from passive to active surveillance by working with communities,’ the international body referred on its communiqué, in which it is already foreseeing the end-of-year festivities, a time when citizens tend to get together and dismiss healthcare measures.

WHO’s authorities asked rich countries to contribute with vaccines against Covid-19 for the people of Africa.
