On his Twitter account, the president recalled the phrase by historic leader Fidel Castro, who calls for eliminating ‘the noise of weapons, threatening language’ and ‘the arrogance on the international scene.’
‘Stop the illusion that the world’s problems can be solved with nuclear weapons,’ the former Cuban head of State said during the 34th session of the United Nations General Assembly, on October 12, 1979.
Diaz-Canel also recalled another moment of the meeting, in which the historic leader said, ‘bombs may kill the hungry, the sick, the ignorant, but they cannot kill hunger, disease, ignorance.’
Cuba was the fifth country to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on September 20, 2017, and it is also the first Zone Free of those armaments in a densely populated area.
The Caribbean nation also belongs to the first region globally to proclaim itself as a Zone of Peace, during the 2nd Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, held in Havana.
Along with the Non-Aligned Movement, which is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its founding in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, Cuba has firmly and systematically demanded the prohibition and total elimination of nuclear weapons.
