Costa Rica calls for fair food production and trade mechanisms

United Nations, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) Costa Rican President Carlos Alvarado advocated on Thursday at the Summit on Sustainable Food Systems for a fair trade, in which prices ought to cover the costs of production, post-harvest, marketing and investment.

He also called to promote more direct marketing mechanisms, in which producers and consumers can trade products at better prices for their benefit, and a healthy and nutritious food.

In a pre-recorded video, the Costa Rican president also pointed out the need to transform the way we produce, consume and conceive food and seek solutions to achieve tangible and positive changes in the world’s food systems.

Alvarado took the opportunity to renew Costa Rica’s commitment to Family Farming and its support to create a Coalition of Countries for Family Farming.

As part of the preparations for this Summit, he said that Costa Rica held four National Dialogues, in which more than 500 people from all sectors interested in developing actions for more sustainable food production, processing, distribution and marketing, participated.

The Costa Rican president concludes this Thursday his participation at the 76th period of sessions of the United Nations General Assembly, which started on Monday with different forums, panels and events, as well as bilateral meetings between heads of State and world entities.
