United Russia, big winner in legislative elections

Moscow, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) The United Russia party has reportedly won over 300 seats for a big majority in the State Duma (Lower House of Parliament). The Central Election Commission (CEC) validated today the results of the legislative elections after all the votes were counted.

According to preliminary figures, the ruling party will obtain around 112 mandates by the vote for the lists of candidates, while it is winning in 198 single-member districts, to secure the constitutional majority in the Lower House, with more than 300 seats.

United Russia won 49.82 percent of the votes. Its general council secretary Andrei Turchak pointed out that the party could reach up to 315 seats, though below the 334 of the previous legislature.

Next are the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, with 18.93 percent; the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, with 7.55; the A Just Russia-For Truth party, with 7.46 and the New People party, with 5.32 percent.

According to the source, the five parties have surpassed the five-percent threshold needed to be a member of the Lower House of Parliament.

Started on Friday, September 17, these elections lead to renew 450 seats in the Duma, in which 226 parliamentarians are needed to have a majority, occupied until now by the United Russia party, with 334 seats.

The elections for the new Lower House took place along with the legislative elections in 39 territorial entities and the election of 12 regional governors.
