FAO supports management of agricultural and forestry sectors in Cuba

Havana, Sep 20 (Prensa Latina) FAO representative in Cuba Marcelo Resende highlighted the UN agency's good will to support the Caribbean island in the design to managing agricultural and forestry systems.

According to Resende, these actions correspond to the efforts by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to support countries in their transformation of their food systems into more sustainable and resilient ones.

Resende explained that they are committed to key principles such as promoting decentralization, strengthening local management and development, as well as bringing agriculture closer to knowledge, science, technology and innovation.

According to Cuban Deputy Minister of Agriculture Maury Hechavarría, it is a policy of great importance for the country’s agrifood sector, as part of the implementation of measures to strengthen agricultural production.

The new management model for the agricultural and forestry sectors, he indicated, seeks to transform the business and cooperative system at all organizational levels in Cuban agriculture; provide greater autonomy to local governments; and have the participation of empowered women and young people committed to the development of the sector.

In the first stage, it will advance in the conceptualization of the policy linked to the Management Model of the Agricultural and Forestry Sectors and its legal instrumentation.

The program will be developed with technical assistance from experts from universities and research centers in Cuba, and will count on the support of the ‘Strengthening policies for sustainable food security in Cuba(POSAS)’ project, the Cuba SAS Country Program, funded by the European Union and implemented by FAO.
