The diplomat stressed that the document is ‘typical’ evidence of interference in Russia’s electoral process and political life. However, he clarified that this is not the official position of the EU and will not have a practical enforcement, Sputnik news agency reported.

On Thursday, the European Parliament approved the document presented in July by its raporteur for relations with Russia and former Prime Minister of Lithuania, Andrius Kubilius, which calls on the leader of this bloc to tighten its Russia policy.

The report urges to increase sanctions against Russia, strengthen EU’s defense capabilities in the face of an alleged Russian threat and seek alternatives to reduce Europe’s energy dependence on this country.

The members of the European Parliament also recommended to disregard the results of the election of the State Duma (lower house of the Russian parliament) if they are fraudulent and do not fulfill democratic and international law principles, according to this bloc’s standards.
