Cuba’s Health Minister calls for greater prevention against Covid-19

Holguin, Cuba, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's Public Health Minister, Jose Ángel Portal, insisted here on the need to act more quickly and professionally when classifying and transferring Covid-19 patients.

During an extensive tour of several health institutions in the municipalities of Banes and Holguin, in this eastern province of the country, the head of the branch emphasized the importance of early treatment to avoid serious complications, many lethal, of Covid-19.

‘In this disease we cannot waste time, we must be effective, especially in view of the circulation of the delta variant’, reiterated Portal in view of the high number of positives reported in the territory in the last months.

The minister emphasized prevention as one of the essential elements to reduce transmission, morbidity and mortality.

‘It is essential to communicate face to face with the population, so that the sick go on time to the health system, because late arrival to our centers can lead to complications, with difficult prognoses if they have comorbidities’. Portal began his visit to the province of Holguin in the coastal municipality of Banes, where he checked the care of the sick, the availability of resources and other aspects in the Emergency center for patients with acute respiratory infections, centers for suspects and the Carlos Enrique Font Hospital.

Holguin province accumulates in 2021 around 43 000 people with the SARS-CoV-2 virus; out of them a little more than 8 000 have been reported in the month of September, with an incidence rate of 808.7 per 100 000 inhabitants.
