Aoun and Mikati staged a confrontation that shattered the hopes of breaking the stalemate to nominate the next government lineup.

General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim, who mediated between them, was reportedly moving forward in the process.

But both officials engaged in a war of words with accusations from one to the other about responsibilities in blocking the nomination of the executive, from which the country has lacked since August 10, 2020.

In a communique from the presidential office, Aoun rejected claims that he was blocking the formation of the government with an alleged demand to own one-third plus one in the future government lineup.
