EU backs helping Afghanistan’s neighbors to cope with refugees

Brussels, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) European Union justice and home affairs ministers pledged Tuesday to support Afghanistan's neighbors to help them host people fleeing the new Taliban regime and prevent a new wave of migrants heading to Europe.

With such a decision, EU wants to prevent more migrants from arriving from Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power on August 15 after a couple of decades of occupation by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) troops commanded by the United States.

In a closing statement following a meeting in Brussels, the ministers said the EU and its 27 nations ‘stand determined to act jointly to prevent the recurrence of uncontrolled large-scale illegal migration movements faced in the past, by preparing a coordinated and orderly response.’

‘The EU will engage and strengthen its support to third countries, in particular neighboring and transit countries that host large numbers of migrants and refugees to strengthen their capacity to provide protection, dignified and safe conditions.

EU vowed to provide a coordinated and orderly response to avoid uncontrolled immigration such as the one in 2015.

In the statement, participants expressed they will support the resettlement of communities, especially vulnerable women and children.
