Sub-Saharan Africa reported some 21,000 new Covid-19 cases

Nairobi, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) To the concern of scientists about the possibility of an uncontrolled spread of the pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday reported 20,497 new Covid-19 cases in sub-Saharan Africa.

The CDC statistics show that the number of cases rose to 7,769,229 and report 647 deaths in the last 24 hours, so the total number of deaths has soared to 195,477 since the outbreak of the pandemic in this part of the world.

Although the CDC figures are lower than those on Monday, scientific circles continue to be concerned about the possibility of a massive spread of the pandemic south of the Sahara and denounced, hours ago, the selfishness of industrialized countries, mostly former colonial metropolises in Africa, which they accuse of hoarding vaccines.

The experts described the situation as ‘immunization apartheid’ by the Western powers to the detriment of African countries.

Apartheid was the name given by the white minority in South Africa to the system of racially segregated development in force in that country until internal pressure forced the release of the anti-racist leader Nelson Mandela from prison and the calling of elections from which a black majority government emerged.

Less than three percent of the 1.3 billion Africans are fully immunized against the pandemic, Ahmed Kalebi, consultant pathologist and founder of the specialized journal Lancet Kenya said.

The denunciation follows criticism in the same vein from the World Health Organization’s director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, who, days ago, accused Western powers of hoarding vaccines instead of sharing them equitably with the rest of the world.
