The area most affected by the climatic calamity is the south of the country, where tens of thousands of people are having great difficulty finding daily sustenance even before the arrival of the dry season, the document of the UN World Food Program (WFP) refers.
That would be the first famine of climate change, after four years of insufficient rainfalls and profusion of sandstorms, a condition that has a direct impact on the scarcity of rainfall, experts assure in the text.
WFP estimates put at 28,000 the number of people living in the area known as Grand Sud who are already suffering from extreme hunger, in addition to 1.14 million in conditions of ‘acute food insecurity.’
The populations of this Malagasy area survive by feeding on leaves, roots, cactus fruits and insects in a situation that is tending to worsen, the NGO Doctors Without Borders predict, which in a separate study estimates that by upcoming December over 1,310 million people could die from starvation.
