Millions of students returned to on-site classes in Mexico

Mexico, Aug 30 (Prensa Latina) About 25 million students of all levels returned today in Mexico to classes after 17 months of confinement in the 32 states of the country, including the capital. The Covid-19 pandemic attacked Mexico in February 2020, and on March 20, with the first death from the disease, the order was given to close schools and that was the last day that more than 25 million students in basic education were in the classrooms of the more than 233,000 centers in the country.

A number of them will return in an unprecedented context where the pandemic prevails, but also educational backwardness, risk of dropping out of school and multiple adverse psycho-emotional and developmental effects as a consequence of confinement, explained the Education Secretariat.

The entity estimated that 5.2 million students, including three million primary school students, were not enrolled in the 2020-2021 school cycle due to Covid-19-related causes or lack of resources, according to the Impact of the pandemic on girls and boys study.

That research revealed that domestic violence registered historic highs from March to June 2021, as during the first half of the year there were 129,20 investigation files for family violence, an increase of 24 percent over the same period of the previous year.

Due to these and other critical indicators in the development of Mexican children, the government urged educational communities to retake the classrooms and provide attention to students.

According to the Education Ministry, the return to school will also serve to begin a learning recovery strategy that will include a period of diagnostic assessments from August 30 to September 10.
