Future president of Barbados moves to republic status

Bridgetown, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) Barbados is currently moving towards the end of its status as a constitutional monarchy to become a new Republic of the Caribbean and has appointed a woman as the future president.

It is General Governor of the island, Dame Sandra Mason, who will take office as president on November 30, according to the plan of the administration of Prime Minister Mia Mottley.

That day wiill be the 55th anniversary of the independence of the former British colony and the beginning of its membership in the Commonwealth of Nations, with Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom as the head of State.

When announcing this change, the governor said that Barbadians want a head of State from Barbados as a logical step towards total sovereignty.

Under government law, the change of status will not lead to the change of the name of the country, the flag and other national symbols and historic events, such as Independence Day.

According to the prime minister, the change is not a divisive decision reflecting a break with the monarchy or disrespect, quite the contrary.

She added that they have excellent relations with the United Kingdom, the royal family, and believe that the time has come to boost the people’s confidence.
