Lack of quorum prevents Parliament debate on Lebanon blast

Beirut, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) Only 39 of 120 legislators on Thursday attended a Lebanese Parliament session, during which the debate on the case of the Beirut port's blast was scheduled.

Adnan Daher, Secretary General of the Lebanese National Assembly, suspended the meeting after verifying lack of a quorum due to the absence of legislators from the Free Patriotic Movement, Lebanese Forces and the Progressive Socialist Party and also, from the Armenian bloc and several independent lawmakers.

The session’s agenda included lifting immunity for three former ministers involved in the August 4, 2020 explosion.

The families of the victims and other activists blocked a road near the UNESCO building, where the session was convened, and announced that they will continue their demonstrations until justice is achieved.

The parliamentarians had to rule on the request by Judge Tarek Bitar, in charge of the probe for the detonation, so that the former ministers of Finance, Public Works and Interior appeared in court.

However, none of them gave their testimony in court on the pretext that immunity exempts them from that obligation.
