For eight consecutive days, the flames have devastated wooded areas and crops on the island, where three villages are in danger, local television reported.
Faced with criticism from the population due to the lack of government action, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis apologized on Monday and assured that ‘responsibilities will be clarified.’
Few days ago, hundreds of residents were evacuated to mainland Greece as thick columns of smoke covered Evia, Greece’s second-largest island.
On Monday, Evia Governor Giorgos Kela described the situation as critical, and warned that the resources to deal with it were insufficient.
Several neighboring countries have sent logistical and human aid to alleviate the situation, while Mitsotakis announced an additional budget of 500 million euros, which will be added to more than one billion euros planned to alleviate the damage in a mid term.
