UNICEF calls for urgent action on climate change

United Nations, Aug 10 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Henrietta Fore on Tuesday called for urgent action to shield children from the alarming trends of climate change in the world.

On Twitter, Henrietta Fore posted the need to protect minors from extreme weather events including floods, droughts, heatwaves and others.

We must act now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and invest in adaptation and community resilience because all children deserve a livable planet, Fore posted and shared data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) most recent report.

On Monday, the UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres claimed that IPCC´s report is a red code for humanity and reveals a serious damage to the world.

Guterres posted on Twitter that the evidence is irrefutable: greenhouse gas emissions suffocate the Earth and endanger billions of people, as the IPCC study revealed.

Global warming affects all regions of the world and many changes are already becoming irreversible, warned Guterres, and, given such an alarming scenario, he called for decisive action as soon as possible to prevent a climate catastrophe.

He also pointed out that there is an imminent risk of reaching 1.5oC of global temperature increase in near future, so the only way to avoid it is to urgently intensify climate efforts, UNSG´s spokesman Stéphane Dujarric stressed.
