Italian parliament debates criminal procedure reform

Rome, Aug 3 (Prensa Latina) The reform of the Italian criminal procedure law on Tuesday reached the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies after a long negotiation process among the parties of the parliamentary majority.

The approval of the initiative, promoted by Justice Minister Marta Cartabia, is key to ensure that the regional assistance funds, approved by the European Union to finance the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, reaches the country through the mechanism ‘Next Generation EU.’

The bill reaches the upper house due to the vote of confidence imposed by the Government on its two articles, which prevents any modification to the final text conciliated by the executive forces led by Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

The Government’s request for a vote of confidence was received in the last few hours by a large majority of lawmakers with 462 votes for and 55 against, for the first article, and 458 votes for and 46 against for the second one.

After the vote scheduled for Tuesday evening, the proposal will go to the Senate where, according to analysts, it must be approved without major objections for its gradual implementation, with a transitional period until 2024, to the crimes committed after January 1, 2020.
