A department spokesman said Officer Kyle DeFreytag, who had been with the department since November 2016, was found dead on July 10. He was 26 years old. Police confirmed DeFreytag was among a host of MPD officers who were sent to the Capitol in response to the riot.
The news comes on the same day that MPD officials confirmed a third police officer death by suicide in the wake of the riot. Earlier on Monday, it was reported that Gunther Hashida – assigned to the Emergency Response Team within the Special Operations Division- was found dead in his residence on Thursday, July 29, the MPD spokesperson Kristen Metzger told CNN.
MPD officer Jeffrey Smith and Capitol Police officer Howard Liebengood both died of suicide in the days following the January incident.
In addition, another MPD officer, Brian D. Sicknick, died on January 7 after a stroke.
For the time being, Justice Department has filed charges against more than 550 people, ranging from possession of weapons, insurrection, assault on authority, invasion of restricted state spaces and attempts to paralyze electoral processes.
A federal court handed down the first prison sentence on July 19, when it sentenced eight-month prison against Paul Allard Hodkings, one of Jan. 9 insurrectionists.
