From his Twitter account, the Caribbean leader highlighted the performance of two-time world champion Alba, who won the bronze medal to open the medal list of national athletes in the five rings event.
In the publication, Diaz-Canel sent a hug to the entire Cuban delegation, while he foresaw new feats of the athletes in Tokyo’s great event.
Close to turning 28, Alba recovered from an initial setback 8-11 against Macedonian Dejan Georgievski, to reach the dispute for the medals with a victory in the repechage 8-2 over Ivory Coast’s Seydou Gbane and in the dispute for the bronze he defeated China’s Hongyi Sun 5-4.
With Alba’s prize, Cuba enters the overall table among the 54 nations with at least one metal after four dates of finals in Tokyo 2020.
