Colombian organizations express solidarity with Cuba

Bogota, Jul 15 (Prensa Latina) The Colombian Communist Party and the Patriotic Union on Thursday expressed their solidarity with the people, government and socialist state of Cuba and condemned the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States.

In a statement, they supported Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel’s call for popular mobilization to defend the institutions and achievements of the Cuban Revolution.

‘We again repudiate the genocidal blockade of the United States against the people of Cuba and its Revolution, which was tightened during the Government of (Donald) Trump and hinders normal everyday life,’ they emphasized in the text.

They pointed out that this policy seeks to suffocate the Cuban revolutionary process by preventing the country from acquiring food, medicine and medical equipment in international markets, affecting tourism and remittances.

The blockade openly violates international law, which is why it is widely rejected in the United Nations General Assembly, this year with 184 votes in favor of ending it, two against and three abstentions, among which, unfortunately, was Colombia, they said.

‘We denounce and condemn the unconventional warfare against socialist Cuba, encouraged by imperialism and the continental extreme right that, under a supposed popular revolt, which does not reject the genocidal blockade, calls for a supposed ‘humanitarian corridor’, which is nothing but a disguised military intervention against the sovereignty so dearly fought for by Cuba,’ they said.

They pointed out that Colombian revolutionaries and democrats know the extraordinary capacity for solidarity of the Cuban people and their socialist Revolution, which is displayed by sending medical missions to many countries to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, and in times of natural disasters.

Likewise, they highlighted Cuba’s support for the poorest nations, including humble young people from the United States, in academic training.

In that regard, they recalled that thousands of young people from Colombia’s countryside and neighborhoods have become professionals with access to scholarships at Cuban universities.
