In a statement signed by the 10 senators whose mandate is still valid, they announced that Lambert will be sworn in as acting president and then promote an agreement among the country’s forces to set up a consensus government.
Joseph has not yet made any comment on the appointment the Senate made, whose impact on the political life of the country is almost non-existent since last year.
The eight senators who voted in favor of the declaration also called for setting up of a new Provisional Electoral Council, to organize general elections as soon as possible.
Neurosurgeon Ariel Henry, appointed prime minister a few days before Moïse’s assassination, will have to support Lambert in the new administration, which has already received the approval of influential parties such as Tet Kalé, the same for which Jovenel Moise and Michel Martelly came to the presidency.
As the political and governmental crisis grows, the Police are moving forward to capture the suspects of the president’s murder, and on Friday confirmed the arrest of 20 of the 28 allegedly implicated.
Five individuals are still at large and another three died during clashes with the police.
