The update of the Presidential Decree on the Situation of Public Calamity seeks a balance between the revival of the socioeconomic activities and the measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, with a greater incidence in Luanda province, where several strains of the SARS-CoV2 coronavirus, which causes the disease, are circulating.
As Health Minister, Dr. Silvia Lutucuta, explained, the delta variant of the pathogen was recently detected in Luanda. Its contagion capacity is higher compared to other coronavirus mutations, such as alpha, beta and gamma, also present in the territory.
Since the first contagions broke out in March 2020, the executive proceeded to the periodic adaptation of the preventive measures to fight Covid-19, giving way to stages of more severe restrictions or easing, depending on the pandemic’s behavior.
The provisions, put into effect this Friday, will run until August 7, and include maintaining the national health fence and banning entry to non-resident foreign citizens, from Brazil and India, or who have made stopovers in those two countries.
According to Dr. Lutucuta, Angola faces a ‘critical and challenging’ situation in relation to malaria, as the disease has affected more than two million people in the first five months of 2021 and at least, 5,573 deaths have been registered.
