Egypt wants binding agreement with Ethiopia on GERD

Cairo, Jul 8 (Prensa Latina) Egypt will call on the UN Security Council to demand that all parties involved in the dispute regarding the construction of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam to sign a binding agreement.

This was announced by Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Relations, Sameh Shoukry, who will participate on Thursday in a meeting of the body in order to analyze the issue.

Shoukry affirmed during an interview with an international agency that after 10 years of talks they have been unable to secure a sufficient flow of water downstream towards Sudan and Egypt.

The official specified that Cairo and Khartoum requested a meeting of the Security Council in the face of the ‘existential threat’ GERD represents for the inhabitants of both countries.

The Minister reiterated Egypt’s rejection of Ethiopia’s decision to begin the second phase of the filling of the dam.

It is expected that the UN special envoy for the Horn of Africa, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, the chief of environment for the UN Inger Andersen, and a diplomat from Congo, which currently occupies the presidency of the African Union, will participate in today’s meeting, in addition to the countries involved and the member States.
