Ocular aggressions by Colombian police documented

Bogota, Jul 4 (Prensa Latina) The Movement of Victims Against Ocular Aggressions by the Mobile Riot Squad (ESMAD) of the National Police of Colombia documents 82 cases during the national strike to this day, but estimates there could be nearly 200 including other scenarios.

According to Noticias Uno, the Movement has 60 members and began being organized early in 202, as ESMAD began carrying out these aggressions already during the strikes in November 2019.

The spokesman for the collective Cristian Zárate partially lost vision in his left eye as a result of an aggression by the force explained that the Movement has basis and an entire organization to promote social, judicial and political actions in order to achieve its goals.

Zárate said the purpose is to achieve the disbanding of ESMAD, vindicate the victims of the State’s systematic act in order not to leave them unattended and so it does not repeat.

A national strike began in Colombia last April 28th against neoliberal measures promoted by the government of Ivan Duque, considered the greatest social outburst in the last 70 years.

After over two months of its beginning, the mobilization in the country continues by means of different expressions such as cultural acts, meetings between sectors, marches, and others, with almost all of them violently repressed by the Police and the ESMAD.

The Director of the National Police of Colombia, Jorge Luis Vargas, announced on Sunday that there will be transformations in the ESMAD in order to ‘promote and guarantee’ human rights, however he approves of its activities in general.
