Peru: Former advisor Montesinos scandal could ratify imprisonment

Lima, Jun 25 (Prensa Latina) Requests to change for imprisonment of former Presidential Advisor Vladimiro Montesinos gained strength today in Peru after audios were revealed, in which he plans to bribe electoral judges to reverse the defeat of candidate Keiko Fujimori.

In the recordings, the apparent voice of Montesinos, who is serving a sentence at the high security prison of a navy base, laments Fujimori’s setback and the victory of teacher Pedro Castillo and says that the only possibility to reverse the official count is to bribe three of the four judges of the National Jury of Elections (JNE).

The interlocutor of the former ‘gray eminence’ of the iron fist government of Alberto Fujimori, Keiko’s father, is retired Army Commander Pedro Rejas, former member of the Popular Force (FP) party and to whom Montesinos gives instructions to coordinate the bribe with Guillermo Sendon.

‘After listening to the audios, it should be clear that Vladimiro Montesinos should move from the Navy Base to Challapalca (Peruvian maximum security prison) to prevent him from continuing to operate for Fujimori’s followers from the shadows,’ commented leftist leader Arturo Ayala.

Jurist Carlos Rivera stated that the revelation coincides with the 20th anniversary of Montesinos’ arrest and delivery to Peru by Venezuelan authorities, adding that ‘now, in the 21st century, Fujimori’s followers continue destroying democracy.’

Although the recordings are pending an expert analysis and raise doubts, veteran politician Fernando Olivera on revealing them called attention to the facilities that Montesinos has.

The alleged conspirators insist on delaying maneuvers, hoping to block the proclamation until July 28, the day of the transfer of the presidential command, when there is no proclaimed president and the head of the Parliament, of right-wing majority, takes over the government and calls new elections.
