In its main editorial on the voting on Wednesday at the United Nations, where the world condemned the unjust 60-years-old economic war against Cuba, the daily recalled that Biden expressed his willingness to restore the ‘moral leadership’ lost by the United States during the four-year Donald Trump administration (2017-2021). Therefore, the fact that he has not taken actions to alleviate the devastating effects of the blockade against Cuba in times of the Covid-19 pandemic and that he keeps the measures taken by Trump has been disappointing.

The newspaper reiterated the condemnation of that US policy and echoed Mexico’s stance because ‘it is not possible to solve global problems and undertake major regional changes without an international consensus based on the unrestricted principle of the peoples’ self-determination.’

The editorial highlighted the condemnation at the UN for the 29th time of the blockade imposed on the small country 59 years ago, but what Washington calls ‘one of the most comprehensive sets of sanctions imposed on any nation’ has not succeeded in breaking the Cuban Revolution through starvation.

However, it has caused incalculable pain to millions of Cubans, who live under the overwhelming blockade imposed on February 3, 1962, by then President John F. Kennedy.

If under normal conditions the blockade entails losses of billions of dollars for Cub’s economy and untold difficulties for the people, the Covid-19 pandemic has forced the world to focus on its most inhumane aspects.

The extraterritorial enforcement of US laws, an illegal measure that is the core of this and the other sanctions undertaken by Washington prevent or increase the costs for the Cuban Government to purchase all kinds of indispensable supplies to fight the coronavirus.

The blockade, La Jornada added, is also accountable for hindering authorities’ efforts to produce and administer vaccines developed by the Cuban biomedical sector.
