Uruguay: 80,000 workers on unemployment insurance

Montevideo, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayans on unemployment insurance totaled 80,000, as published by the Social Security and Work Ministry on its digital portal on Wednesday.

These numbers correspond to May in an ascending curve of 72,000 in March and 76,000 in April.

Minister Pablo Mieres attributes this increase to the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has forced to cut down some activities, even if they were fewer than what was advised by the Honorary Scientific Consultant Group to contain the infection wave, accompanied by economic assistance.

Of those on unemployment insurance, more than half went fully for it, and 28 percent received partial or flexible benefits, a category included during the current health crisis.

One out five workers on unemployment insurance was a victim of layoffs, the rest underwent reductions in working hours, mostly in the depressed sectors of accommodation, meal service and trade.

The PitCnt union called for a national strike on Thursday against poverty and for life, employment and better salaries.
