Signed by Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK: Women for Peace NGO (a left-wing internationally active NGO), the report stated that Joe Biden -as presidential candidate- pledged to ‘swiftly reverse Donald Trump’s failed steps that have harmed the Cuban people and done nothing to move on democracy and human rights.’
The White House announced a review of its policy towards Cuba, but, to surprise and disappointment of many Cuban observers and despite the fact that most of Trump’s policy changes could be reversed with a single executive order, the US president didn’t move an inch.
Medea Benjamin detailed the efforts by several groups to favor the normalization of relations with Havana, campaigns to support the vaccination of Cubans, among them the one aimed at sending four million syringes.
Regarding the June 23 vote at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in which the United States is called to lift its hostile, genocidal blockade against Cuba, an array of groups called for the White House to follow former President Obama´s example and not to oppose this year’s resolution.
Likewise, Benjamin urged Biden to ‘avail himself of this opportunity to announce his measures to provide relief to the Cuban people and to return to the path of normalization.’
Benjamin cited several initiatives in the Congress including a letter by 80 representatives urging Joe Biden ‘to take swift executive action to reverse Trump´s draconian policies and to return to the diplomatic relations.’
