Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez told reporters that the Dominican Government asked Haitian authorities to stop the aforementioned project and ‘as we have not seen any response, we made the decision not to attend the meetings’.

Alvarez added that as soon as the country was aware of the construction of the canal in the Massacre River, it sent a communication to the Government of the neighboring country, in which it requested information on the matter and demanded the works to stop.

Recently, the Dominican-Haitian Bilateral Joint Commission met in this capital and the delegations agreed to create a technical group for better understanding of the works being done in the border zone, within the framework of the Environment and Agriculture Sub-Commission.
