Speaking to the press, the official recalled that the two countries have an agreement on gas transit to Europe, which will remain in force for the entire period of its validity.
‘But even after the expiration date of this agreement, Russia does not intend to abandon the transit through Ukraine,’ said Peskov, who explained that gas shipments to Europe will increase, so the route through Ukraine will be demanded.
The spokesman noted that for Russian President Vladimir Putin, this is exclusively an economic and commercial issue and the country must comply with market requirements and signed contracts.
‘As for Ukraine, as the owner of the gas transportation system, it must ensure its technical conditions,’ he said.
In late December 2019, Ukraine, Russia and the European Union inked a new gas transit contract for five years with the possibility of extension until 2034.
The document establishes a guaranteed minimum gas pumping of 65 billion cubic meters in the first year and 40 billion cubic meters in the next four years.
