A dozen association leaders, government representatives and officials of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) formed a panel in which they presented their views on the impact of climate changes on these social groups.
Cardinal Peter Turkson, prefect of the Department for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, and the President of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Affairs Anne Nuorgam also attended the debate.
The President of the Fund for the Development of Indigenous Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean Myrna Cunningham made her opening speech pointing out that any climate change-related debate requires taking into account indigenous peoples´ vision.
The Afro-Colombian National Peace Council Coordinator Richard Moreno highlighted the impact of climate change on Afro-descendant communities in Colombia, amid complex circumstances worsened by an array of factors such as armed force presence.
The President of the Platform for the Development of the Africa-Europe Diaspora Alexis Neuberg addressed the migratory flow issue caused by climate change, as a result of which other issues emerge such as discrimination and marginalization of migrants in other countries.
