Unfortunately, we cannot be optimistic because four months after Joe Biden assumption there has been no change in US policy towards Cuba, Herrera said during a virtual talk with activists in the United Kingdom.
Herrera stressed that all measures and restrictions imposed by Republican Donald Trump remain unchanged and are fully applied against the Cuban people under Joe Biden, despite promises made during his electoral campaign to review bilateral relations.
According to Herrera, President Biden has the privilege to deactivate Title III of the Helms-Burton Act that allows US citizens to sue those who outlay on properties nationalized in Cuba after the Revolution Triumph, or to remove Cuba from the list of states sponsor of terrorism.
But he (Biden) has not done anything about it, despite the fact that, as we did with previous governments, we have made it clear to him that we are willing to establish normal and civilized relations with his country, she remarked.
During the online event organized by the Campaign for Solidarity with Cuba (CSC) in UK, Herrera analyzed the context in which the Cuban government will present a resolution at the UN General Assembly on June 23 on the need to end the US blockade imposed for six decades.
She explained, for example, that in 2020 Washington applied resurgence measures that negatively affected Cuba’s possibility to effectively fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
She also reiterated this unilateral measure is major drawback to Cuba’s economic development, achievement of sustainable development goals and confrontation to climate change.
