Nine judges of the Supreme Court, three of them appointed by former President Donald Trump, will consider such a legislation that bans abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy in the southern state, following two lower courts would consider the legislation as unconstitutional.

US Supreme Court recognized this right of women in an emblematic decision of the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion across the country. That ruling forbade laws banning abortions conducted on fetuses unable to survive outside the womb –generally before between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.

The 2018 Mississippi law bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy except in cases of medical emergency or serious fetal anomalies, and it was blocked in first instance and then on appeal, for which its authors decided then on lodging an appeal to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court will likely discuss about this issue later this year and final decision would be informed in early 2022, during the campaign for the midterm legislative elections, so experts say the abortion issue will have a significant political impact.
